The great sages describe the nature of attachment. Attachment cannot be killed; it has simply to be transferred.
“Consciousness is the platform of attachment. Desireless-ness is not possible for a living entity. A living entity, by constitution, has the propensity to be attached to something.” – Radhanath Swami
We see that if someone has no object of attachment, if he or she has no children, then one transfers that attachment to pets. This indicates that the propensity for attachment cannot be stopped.
Attachment for one thing, the great sages say, is the cause of bondage in conditioned life, and the same attachment, when applied to something else, opens the door of liberation.
On the path of yoga the perfection of detachment is complete attachment. Simple detachment from the selfish urges of the mind and senses can bring peace. But the soul is thirsting for something more than this.
“The soul is thirsting for love, for prema, and that prema manifests when we become completely attached to God, Krishna.”- Radhanath Swami
Attachment to Krishna means attachment to serving Krishna, to pleasing Krishna.
When we love those who love God, God reveals His love to us. Lord sends His loving devotees to this world so that we can transfer our attachment to them. Thus it is rightly said in the great scripture Shrimad Bhagavatam: “Every learned man knows very well that attachment for the material is the greatest entanglement of the spirit soul. But that same attachment, when applied to the self-realized devotees, opens the door of liberation.” (SB 3.25.20).
