Yoga of Work – Radhanath Swami

Yoga means to reconnect our consciousness with God, and the yoga of work is to connect our work with God. How do we connect our work with God? By doing it in proper spiritual consciousness.  It is not that we have to change our job or give everything away; it means we have to learn how to live in divine consciousness.

That consciousness develops when we think of God, worship Him and become His devotees, when we associate with saintly people, when we make our home a temple and worship God, when we regularly purify and intensify our minds by chanting God’s names, and when we live a pure life abstaining from illicit sex, intoxication, gambling and meat eating. By practicing these processes our mind becomes divine, our consciousness becomes pure and then naturally whatever work we do, we do it in the spirit of compassion as an offering to God.

This passage from His Holiness Radhanath Swami Maharaj’s lecture has a very practical message. There are two ways in which this works. In the first, most direct way, the consciousness that we develop by prayerful mood, good association and regulated life, makes our work a natural offering to God. In the second way, we learn to see the bigger picture; our consciousness during the work is not as important as the consciousness behind the work.

The articles on this site are based on the classes given by Radhanath Swami over the years.

Radhanath Swami is a source of inspiration for several projects, both in India and outside of it. Radhanath Swami is also a great source of inspiration for several thousands of people aspiring to seek spiritual enlightenment in the line of bhakti yoga. His students come from various walks of life, age groups, castes, races, and nationalities.

In 1970, at the age of 19, Radhanath Swami started his journey of spiritual quest in Europe. While at Greece, a voice within him directed him towards India. Radhanath Swami set off for his destination by hitchhiking. After meeting several people and studying various paths of spiritual enlightenment along the way, he finally reached India. Radhanath Swami’s experiences through the journey enabled him to understand truth from all cultural perspectives. The sufferings and exploitations he endured on this path made Radhanath Swami more determined and focused; it increased his faith and humility. Radhanath Swami’s uncompromising determination to find a guru who could provide answers for his questions made him reach the holy land of Vrndavan, India, the holy place of Radha and Krsna. The deep realizations that Radhanath Swami gained in his travels now reflect in his teachings.

Radhanath Swami learned from many but accepted one guru. Radhanath Swami’s surrender and service to his spiritual master is a great source of inspiration to all his followers. Radhanath Swami’s lectures, kirtans, and yatras sustain the spiritual lives of many. Radhanath Swami’s explanation of complex topics of scriptures and the insight that he provides into apparently confusing philosophical topics is amazing.
